Goodbye, Home Run (a poem)

August 14, 2019

This isn’t strictly DC sports, but growing up in the DC area without a baseball team for several decades, most of us were rooting for the Orioles. This season, that is an exercise in pain.

To that point, the Washington Post put together every one of the home run calls Orioles announcer Gary Thorne has suffered through this season at the hands of one man: Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres. It’s already record-setting for the division era at 13, and one shy of the all time record by Lou Gehrig. The O’s play the Yanks again this afternoon. If O’s manager Brandon Hyde doesn’t think to pitch around Torres a few hours from now, I guess it will be Goodbye, Home Run, all over again. Good luck, O’s fans.

I strongly suggest you listen to the audio as you follow along with the verse. There will be laughter. There will be tears.
